The City of Savonburg began in 1879 before being incorporated as a city in 1902. Savonburg grew around the Katy Railroad. By the early 1900s Savonburg had become one of the most profitable shipping points in the region. Savonburg hosted a fair, had businesses, and provided education through high school.
Savonburg’s peak population was around 300 residents. Savonburg began to dwindle when the invention of the automobile made travel for employment, shopping, and entertainment feasible. Savonburg maintains a population of approximately 100 residents, and still has a Library and Community Center.
