Gas City Marshal Isaac West
On December 15, 1921 Marshal West was attempting to execute a city council order on D.A. Prosser, a city resident. As Marshal West approached, Prosser raised a gun and shot Marshal West. Marshal West immediately collapsed and died.
Prosser was arrested and transported to the Allen County Jail at Iola where he was held for a short time. The Sheriff believed Prosser would fall victim to an angry mob, and moved him to another jail “somewhere in Kansas.” A jury determined Prosser had shot Marshal West deliberately, premeditatedly, and maliciously with the intent to kill him, and he was charged with 1st Degree Murder.
On February 15, 1922 Prosser was found guilty of 1st Degree Murder after only 35 minutes of deliberation by the jury. Prosser was sentenced to life in prison in Lansing, Kansas.
Marshal West may be gone, but he will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved him.
